Mareeba to Chillagoe  14th - 16th May 2010

Running for Natalie Barnes and

Children with Cerebral Palsy

Above 2009 Wheellie Mad Women running for Corey

Let us introduce ourselves.  We are ten “Wheellie Mad Women” from Cairns.  We have come together to pursue a personal goal – to push a wheelbarrow as fast as we can from Mareeba to Chillago, in the Great Wheelbarrow Way Race (14 – 16 May 2010).

But as much as this event shows we must be “Wheelie Mad” (do you know we are planning to sprint the 144 kilometres?), you should know that we are “Wheellie” passionate...passionate about our local FNQ kids with cerebral palsy.

As part as our endeavour to participate in the Great Wheelbarrow Way Race, we plan to raise awareness and much needed funds for children with Cerebral Palsy.  Cerebral palsy is the name given to a condition which affects the way the brain controls muscles of the body.   Approximately every 15 to 18 hours one child in Australia is born with cerebral palsy, with every two to three people out of 1000 having cerebral palsy.  There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but there are many types of treatments and activities that can help these kids reach their maximum potential.

Our goal is raise $10,000 in support of these inspirational kids.  Half the funds will be used by FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support Group Inc. to purchase some much needed equipment for a special young lady with cerebral palsy, Natalie Barnes. Natalie is in desperate need of some changes to her communication computer system.  These changes would enable her to communicate with her family and peers more easily. The other half will be used to improve access to therapies, to recreational activities and to other forms of support for other Far North Queensland children with cerebral palsy.
